Frantiskovy Lazne, a spa town located 3km north of the city of Cheb and just 5km from the German border, was established by doctor Bernhard Adler in 1793. The town is full of typical spa architectural structures, which were built in the 18th and the 19th century, such as the Classical and Empire buildings, the stylish pavilions, the parks, and also the church monuments. The spas are well known for their rich deposits of sulphur-ferrous peat and minerals. The springs such as the Luisa Spring, the Glauber Springs are used for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, gynaecological diseases and movement/muscular disorders. There are 24 springs in and around Frantiskovy Lazne. The springs are caused by geological water tables underground and a nearby volcano. The water is heated by the volcano, which is now extinct, and forces its way to the surface, where it either runs, flows, bubbles or gushes like a geezer, for all to see.
