Eyelid surgery

The eyes, and the structures around them, contribute a great deal to the expression in our faces. With the passage of time, the eyelid skin stretches; fat bulges and muscles weaken regardless of the condition of the rest of our bodies.

Eyelid surgery (technically called blepharoplasty) is a procedure to remove fat- usually along with excess skin and muscle-from the upper and lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes, features that make you look older and more tired than you feel, and may even interfere with your vision.

Eyelid surgery and forehead lifts are often done in combination with each other to achieve the youthfulness that many people are looking for 5 to 10 years before they need a facelift.

These procedures are usually carried out by board certified professionals known as oculoplastic surgeons. Ocuplastic surgeons specialize in plastic and reconstructive surgery of the eye.

Lower eyelid surgery

If the skin under the eye is weakened and needs to be tightened the excess tissue is removed by making an incision just below the lashes of the lower eyelid resulting in an inconspicuous linear scar.

For lower eyelid surgery, often an incision is hidden just below the lower lashes. Excess fat in both the upper and lower eyelids may be removed, or sometimes lower eyelid fat is redistributed.

Upper eyelid surgery

Weakening of the upper eyelid or a drooping upper eyelid may be corrected by removing the excess tissue. If the eyelid is heavy and swollen, the fat and muscle layers behind the eyelid are also removed.

For upper eyelid surgery, generally, an incision is hidden within  the natural fold of the upper eyelid and extends slightly beyond the outside corner into the laugh lines or other existing creases.

These procedures take between 45 and 90 minutes with a recovery period of four to five days for an upper blepharoplasty and up to one week for a lower blepharoplasty.

During the initial consultation, you may be asked to look in a mirror  and point out exactly what you would like to see improved.  This will help your plastic surgeon to understand your expectations and determine whether they can realistically be achieved.
