xG coming to Europe

From "Low power Wireless Startup Comes to Europe" by Richard Wilson, Electronics Weekly, 20 September:

"Florida-based wireless technology player xG Technology is planning to introduce its novel approach to broadband wireless transmission to Europe and is lining up a float on London's Alternative Investment Market (AIM).

"The company has already demonstrated the technology called xMax in the US. The company said the advantage of the technology, which can be operated in the 900MHz unlicensed band, is that it can be used to transmit data using low power RF signals which sit just above the noise floor and do not interfere with other signals operating in the band.

"In a demonstration last year, the firm said it used a transmitter to broadcast a 3.67Mbit/s signal more than 18 miles using only 35mW of RF output power. In a separate demonstration, the firm transmitted full motion video over a distance of 100 feet using 300nW of transmitted power. According to the firm, this is significantly lower power than comparable systems such as 802.11 WLANs. Voice-over-IP systems are expected to be an early application for the technology.

"In June, the company took its next step in commercializing the technology with the introduction of an evaluation kit. Called the xG System Simulation Blockset, the kit provides users with the ability to test xG Flash Signaling. The kit implements the features of xMax in the unlicensed ISM-900 MHz and allows users to integrate it in the MATLAB environment. The kit features an encoder, narrowband carrierless transmitter and supports data rates from 1Mbit/s to 17Mbit/s.

"The company has also been working with the London office of Credit Suisse as its strategic advisor."
