South Korea: UWB guidelines expected soon

A new report on "The Status of Korean UWB Regulation" was presented last week at the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity's Wireless Forum in Shenzhen, China. Produced by Korea's Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), the report disclosed that

"... the Korean UWB forum will publish a final guideline document by the end of the year 2005... In principle, the UWB spectrum plan specified by FCC is used as the main reference and appropriate modifications are made in order to accommodate the spectrum environment in Korea. It is planned to make an official request for [the Ministry of Information and Communication] to open a new spectrum plan between 3.1 ~ 4.9 GHz band specifically dedicated to UWB applications... In Korea, the use of unlicensed low power emission devices is restricted such that the upper limit of the allowable emission level is lower than the current FCC regulation [for UWB] by 25 dB. Therefore, without introducing a new regulatory plan, only limited applications of low-power devices will be allowed....

"An annual international UWB forum/workshop among Korea, China and Japan is scheduled on Sept. 27th. In the forum, it will be addressed that there is an urgent need for the Asian countries to develop a joint technology standard..."
