NEWSPortable brain scanner uses BluetoothFrom the British Journal of Healthcare Computing & Information Management (blogged, 11 October): "Ambulance crews could soon be equipped with a portable brain scanner that will enable them to assess and even treat stroke patients on the way to hospital. Dr Alistair McEwan of University College London is developing a lightweight scanner that can be carried on an ambulance, linked to an on-board computer using Bluetooth wireless technology. "Expected to be cheap, the portable device will use a new imaging technique called electrical impedance tomography that can detect changes or abnormalities in the brain and distinguish between types of stroke. "The development project is being funded by a £140,000 grant from the medical research charity Action Research." [Bluetooth: 3 November 2005] |
