New radio plan adopted in Ukraine
TASS reported today that Ukraine's Prime Minister, Yuri Yekhanurov, has signed a new national frequency plan.
An earlier article in ITnews said the plan identifies new technologies whose introduction is planned for the near future, as well as measures preparing their introduction - including new allocations and awarding licenses by auction. The TASS report specifically mentioned 3G mobile services, DTV and WiMAX.
ITnews said the Minister of Transport and Communications, Victor Bondar, expects Ukraine's first license auctions to be held in the second half of 2006.
The new radio plan advances the process of transferring frequencies to nongovernmental use. An article last November in Podrobnosti said only 0.5 percent of Ukraine's spectrum was allocated exclusively for nongovernmental use. The Government which was then in power announced the goal of raising that figure to at least 70 percent by 2015. It is not clear if the current government shares that goal.
