WiFi links waiters, kitchen to streamline restaurant work

From "Now Comes The 'Wi-Fi' Waiter," EFY News Network, 25 January 2007: "Gone are the days when a waiter used to take orders on paper and move from desk-to-desk and then to the chef. Now, the new-age waiters will be carrying Wi-Fi devices through which they can send the order directly to the chef, right from your table.

"IDS Softwares Pvt. Ltd., a product software company [based in India], has launched Fortune MobilePOS, a product which enables stewards in a restaurant [or any other food and beverage outlet] to take an order from the guest electronically on a hand-held wireless PDA device. Fortune MobilePOS... would greatly reduce the hassles associated with the traditional way of order taking on paper and then traveling to the kitchen to place the order. The moment order is saved on the hand held device, it is transmitted wirelessly and printed at the kitchen(s)...

"The key features of the product include: paperless, wireless, handheld [touch-screen] order entry, multi-level item modifiers and multi-outlet handling. The product finds application in... any outlet where kitchen is at a distance... Fortune MobilePOS uses Wi-Fi technology and is compatible with MS windows for mobile pocket PC platform and MS windows terminal services.

"The new product, besides enhancing image of the restaurant and increasing guest satisfaction levels, would also help the management in optimally utilising the steward's time to remain more focused in serving the guests rather than mundane task as well as reduce F&B overheads involved with auditing of manual KOT [kitchen order ticket] system."
