CLAUDIO DIVINO - discovering the genius
Claudio Divino - creator, inventor, philosopher: the influence of Monteverdi on the Europe of his time and on generations of composers to come was quite invaluable. Innsbruck`s Summer Academy 2003 traces the new concertante style of Monteverdi and its relevance for the music of his contemporaries.
The Academy is a series of masterclasses for young professional musicians and advanced students. In a combination of individual tuition and intensive workshops with ensembles of varying sizes, distinguished teachers from around the world present historical performance practice and their own individual experience of contemporary interpretation.
The Academy is traditionaliy an integral part of the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music. The daily performances at the festival (among which will be a staged version of Claudio Monteverdi`s "Orfeo" and a concert performance of Joseph Haydn`s "The Seasons") are there to inspire and animate individual artistic work in the masterclasses.
Success lies in concentrated work in small classes: we aim to create classes with an optimum level of ability and interest. To this end we require you to send a short demo CD/cassette (duration approx. 10 minutes, 2 to 3 shorr pieces) to accompany your application.
COURSE PROGRAMMES
VOICE: RICHARD WISTREICH
"Cantar recitando" and "Recitar cantando" - development and importance of text and music in the compositions of the 16th and 17th centuries.
CORNETT: BRUCE DICKEY ~ TROMBONE : CHARLES TOET "Per sonar e cantar" - central theme for the tutors of cornett and trombone will be the concertante style at the time of Monteverdi.
RECORDER: HAN TOL
Repertoire from the 16th and 17th centuries (ricecares, canzvnas and sonatas, fantasias, duetts and ensemble pieces by Giamberti, Viviani, Trabaci, Gabrieli, Gussage, etc.). Cantatas by A. Scarlatti.
NATURAL TRUMPET: ANDREAS LACKNER
Free choice of repertoire, with emphasis on Italy (large trumpet ensemble and chamber music with strings).
Works by Bendinelli, Fantani, Torelli, Franceschini, Manfredini, Bononcini, Aldrovandini, Albrici, etc..
DULCIAN: CHRISTIAN BEUSE Free choice of programme.
BAROQUE VIOLIN: JOHN HOLLOWAY
Italian music from Castello to Corelli, pieces by Fontana, Marini, Uccellini, Pandolf-Mealli, etc. In addition, their "German" successors Schmelzer, Biber, Muffat and Walther.

Free choice of programme frvm the solo repertoire of the Renaissance and Baroque. Basso Continuo and song accompaniment in the l7th century. Prepared duos (voice/lute, violin/ltheorbo, etc.) are particularly welcome.

Italian andItalian-inspired keyboard music from 1600 - 1800.
BODY AWARENESS: UTA VOGT-EISSLER
The body awareness classes help to create an intensive feeling of the complete body on stage; eg. removal of wrong posture, intensifying breathing, and loosening stiffness. Suitable for singers and instrumentalists alike. Early application is recommended.

other bass improvisation forms).
LUNCH CONCERTS IN THE HOFGARTEN The idea behind the Summer Academy`s lunchtime concerts is to grab the attention of people from the streets and widen the audience for early music. They also give young ensembles the chance to play in the festival. Ensembles comprising course participants are invited to apply to play in the open-air midday concerts in the pavillion of Innsbruck`s court park. Interested musicians should send a demo cassette or CD (an approx. 15 minute presentation of the ensemble) to the Summer Academy by the 15 th of April . It should be marked "Lunchkonzerte". Ensembles selected to perform by the artistic director will be reimbursed with half of their course fee.
OPENING CONCERT
The opening concert for all Summer Academy course participants is thematically interwoven into the masterclasses for 2002.
