Origin of Kurilian Bobtails

Kuril Islands   It is known for a long time already that in the most eastern part of Russia, Sachalin and Kuril Islands, live cats with short-cut tale. But there had been a lot of time to reveal them.
In the 80 years of the 20th century began the organized breeding of cats in Russia. Since that time some people who were returning from their Far East business trip brought the first Kurilian Bobtails. Some of the cats were considered as Japanese Bobtails, but because of the short-cut tale, body shape and fur structure, which were different from Japanese Bobtail, the judgement was uncertain.
The Kurilian Bobtail of these days differs from the original individuals, who live free in the nature, with bigger size. The weight of the tom-cats living free in the nature is 3.5 ÷ 4 kg and the cats 2 ÷ 2.5 kg. The weight of the tom-cats living in the breeding stations for two or three generations is 5 ÷ 6 kg, the weight of the cats is 3 ÷ 4 kg. The fur of this breeding can be short (KBS) or long variation (KBL).
In the Russia there are according the official information from the year 2002 approximately 40 breeding stations, mostly WCF members, which are breeding the Kurilian Bobtails, suitable for export also (3 known generations of ancestors). Besides Russia the breeding exists in Ukraine, Estonia and Lithuania but in all those countries it is infrequent.
