St. George Basilica
The
best preserved monument from the Romanesque epoch at the Prague Castle.
The original building was totally destroyed by a fire in 920. Today´s
shape of the nave and two aisles basilica was finished by 1142. At the
turn of the 19th and 20th century it was reconstructed. The Romanesque
interior with the tombstones of St. Ludmila and the Pøemyslide monarchs
Vratislav I and Boleslav II are original.
The towers of the Basilica are of different height and thickness. The
stronger tower called Adam protects the Eva at the South from sunbeams,
in the style of the Italian master-builders. The tower Eva is deflected
by 42 cm from its vertical axis.
Nowadays the concerts of classical music are presented in the marvellous
Romanesque interior of St. George Basilica.
